  • After nearly a decade of waiting, the EarthBound documentary is here! We got the whole Raleigh Collective together to watch it, including five of us who are former Starmen.net staffers or deeply involved in the site in some way. This movie is basically about our childhoods.

Yoooo third strongest marriage is such a badass honour to have (as wacky as that sounds entirely outta context) 😂 We've had the privilege of getting to see so many "Starmen proposals/weddings" not just on this vlog but on Starmen Funfest streams for instance (still tearing up at how Matt proposed to Liz all those years ago!!!! AHHHHHH), and it's so very heartwarming to know that this little video game made by a Japanese man 30 years ago (M2 is 30 this year! WHAT) created so many beautiful friendships, relationships, marriages, memories... yeah. Wow. Hearing your stories as former Starmen staff/longtime members was really nice and it's great to get a closer look at what the American side of the fandom looked like (as you were the only ones who got the game released outside of Japan... lucky bastards :P).
Anyway! I'm very much looking forward to watching this doc. Along with the one from NintendoLife doc from... whenever that was (two years ago? My memory is AWFUL), documentaries like these just make my heart sing as a long-lived Mother fan. It feels like coming home, in a strange way. The Mother/EarthBound fandom has, for twenty dang years and two thirds of my life, has been such a joy to be a part of, and it's great to see that we're all still going strong despite being all grown up with 'boring adult lives'. ❤

My only real association to earthbound is through you guys. But I’ve been watching these vlogs now for over a decade. And we’re similar ages. And you’ve absolutely sold me on watching the documentary. Web 1.0 was truly a special thing.

It was so well done glad you finally got the crew together to see it
Also glad we finally got to see the interview you and mal did forever ago on the blu ray
As a kid who got into Earthbound right around the time Fangamer got going with rolling out the mother 3 handbook it was surreal seeing moments I've only read about put in context in a fun and emotional way
It really is a film that makes you treasure your friendships

Glad y'all enjoyed the documentary! I'm definitely more in the Brandon camp as far as becoming a part of/adjacent to the community around the Mother 3 translation era, but it was really fun watching the documentary and being like "Oh, yeah, I've heard most of these stories". A really well made film.
This vlog also got me thinking about how I ended up watching the vlog within the first year (when I was still in high school) as a result of finding it via your old videos like I Am Earthbound, haha

Ha ha now I can openly talk about Jeff's suit! Joking aside it's so good that Jeff did this in memory of Dogbomb, I remember when they passed and to say it left a massive impact in the fandom is an understatement. It's so good to see such a varied crowd come out to these walks, including Jeff, keep Dogbomb's memory alive and raise money for charity with these walks

What an amazing butterfly effect! None of you would have never met without Earthbound and that website, I wonder what your life would be like if Earthbound was never made... It's kind of scary how much of life is based on simple coincidences or luck, meeting the right people at the right time. It is kind of shame that it is much more difficult to form such online communities these days.

1:17 I was not expecting Dogbomb to be mentioned in this video and I did NOT know people dedicated going on those walks for him. I never knew him but I remember when he died so many people honored that man. I gotta respect that he died to help find a cure for something currently incurable.

As a very old Starmen member (2005?), this movie was a beautiful time capsule from that era. I never participated in any of the PK Call’N campaigns, but I very much remember them. I also remember Reid’s IRC chats with the community saying that Mother 3 was most likely coming to the US. It was a great movie about how friends were made in the relatively early internet when you were a gamer with little to no in-town friends and how important a shared interest can be in forming those relationships. A definite watch if you are an EarthBound fan for sure.

Weird coincidence, my sisters and I attended an Earthbound USA showing at VGMcon in Minneapolis hosted by the composer of the documentary, Robbie "Gwobs" Benson on the very day of this vlog! The showing was followed by a Q&A session with Gwobs as well as Jazzy and the production team via video call. It was awesome!

Just got linked to this video over the weekend, and it was really cool to hear all your reactions and memories! I also had a little watch party for the documentary with some friends, and I totally relate to feeling bewildered and *extremely catered to* by watching a feature length film touch on so many moments adjacent to my childhood. So many times did we point at the screen and yell out forum screen names to other friends who had no idea of who any of these people were. Kind of funny to out yourself as a giant nerd that way, but overall I found the doc really entertaining and, as you put it, coherent lol. Who knew it could be done? (Major congrats to Jazzy for pulling this off!)
Also, to go on a bit of a tangent: As a current behind-the-scenes/staff guy at starmen, I think its completely true that those were the golden years of community organizing and friendship building. I joined like right after the Mother 3 patch came out, and I still feel extremely lucky that I was able to make so many friends and have so many weird and wonderful experiences thanks to the events and energy starmen was putting out there in the world in the late 00s and early 2010s. It was kind of pointed it out in the video, but even though kids today have modern social media and discords and so on, there was something magical about having a bunch of people on this new digital frontier, all within driveable distance from each other, and who could actually get together offline and make genuine connections in person. Like, in what universe do all these relationships stem from conversations people had on an online message board, right? I'm really not sure that kind of thing still happens today in the same way, since social media today feels more global than local, as it did back then.
I guess I also think there's an interesting discussion to be had on the merits of old-school message boards like starmen in the day and age of algorithmic social media feeds. I kind of chuckled when Alex mentioned that the site is dead, because like, he's not wrong to an extent lol. As an adult now, I still volunteer a little of my time now & then, mostly because I think its worth preserving that kind of online space/experience in some way, shape or form, for anyone be able to stumble upon and check out, even if most of us running the site now aren't necessarily sticking around because of a desire to promote Earthbound/MOTHER fandom. I think I remember you saying something about how Camp Fangamer felt like you were 'stepping into an alternate therapeutic dimension' (or words to that effect), and I guess that's kind of what I would love starmen to be these days (in website form). In my view, keeping that space alive, however small it may be, is worth a couple of hours work each week to clean up the spambots, run occasional art events, and generally just tidy up the place in case a guest drops in and wants to see the forum where so much game industry-related history happened.
Overall, Starmen still sometimes puts on events, has a few regulars who hang out, and also sees the occasional oldbie pop in to say hi, which is nice. My experience on the site really has shaped my life, and although you can't live in the past forever, I'm glad to be able to give back to starmen in some small way, especially with fangamer being very gracious in continuing to keep the lights on!

I picked up the movie from Fangamer's booth when I went to PAX East! I haven't had the opportunity to watch it, but I am excited when I eventually do! The first video of yours I watched was Bring Lucas to America back when I was a freshman in high school (so around 2009) and seeing someone so dedicated to the MOTHER series was what convinced me to get into it! And watching through the vlog journey multiple times has caused me to know a lot about the Starmen crew so it'll be interesting to see the movie from that perspective as well!

I'm relatively new to the Mother fandom, having watched a Mother 3 LP in 2019 and used my annual two-week respiratory infection in 2021 to finally see an EarthBound one. I can't really explain why (maybe because I've been watching the vlog for so long?), but something about the Mother series is just so comforting to me, despite having not grown up with it. I hope I'm able to watch the documentary (I'm not in the US), because it sounds like it captures that same feeling.

Double commenting because this one is unrelated to my previous question, and is directly video related.
I have never played Earthbound. That's not exactly true, I've been as far as Happy Happy village once, 12 years ago. Despite that, the game has had a surprising impact on my life. I was an avid webcomic reader in the '00s, one of them being 8-Bit Theater. 8BT signal-boosted an event described as "Playing Final Fantasy on someone else's dime. Then giving those dimes to charity." Following that link I was introduced to TheSpeedGamers. TSG had a relationship with Starmen and Fangamer which introduced me to the Tucson crew. TSG also introduced me to ProtonJon and Chugga, whom I followed into TheRunawayGuys, and Colosseum. And after Colo 2019 I started following the Vlog and StephenPlays more than once is a blue moon. At which point I was like "Ah, Stephen was part of the Starmen guys. Like Emile, and Reid, and Britt."
So even though I've never played the game, ya'll have been constant, reoccurring characters in the story of my life. It's kind of like if you don't pick a side in Skyrim you will keep running into random Imperial or Stormcloak encampments. This isn't the story I'm following, but it is happening and I keep bumping into it.

I look back on my time in starmen with both a nostalgic fondness and also a huge amount of cringe. Because matter-of-factly, I was not a mature person. None of us were, but I was this edgy little shitlord that wanted to spend more time doing drugs and lashing out at people. I remember maybe a year or two ago I went through all my old posts on the 'FROum' and said some things I wish I never said, but the internet really was the lawless west, especially to a 13-14 year old with barely any supervision. On the other side of the coin, spending my nights in a lowly lit room in an IRC chatroom and listening to Jami and Chaz being weird on a public pirate radio and hanging with the other nerds was one of the coolest things I can remember from my early to mid teens. I remember I think I even voiced Aloysius on some sketch show that someone put together with my like 20 year old (at the time) 3.5mm computer mic. Also there isn't a month that goes by where I don't sing Blue Drank out loud so if you know where I can find an mp3 of that masterpiece, send me a DM please hahah.
The discussion of web 1.0 and all the memories of starmen really made me feel a bit wistful about the whole situation. Nostalgia really is a hell of a drug, da ne? I remember fervently following the progress updates Clyde would push out with like percentages of how much was done in chapter x and chapter y, and menus and all that. I was just on the cusp of sentience as a functional human being before I late-bloomed into empathy so there's this like foggy haze with a tinge of forgetfulness where you guys would discuss something and I'd spout off some meme like "I GOT JONK IN DA TRONK AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH IT" and barely having the memory of the source. Fobbies are Borange, Mother Said Not To, Tree from my Youth, Loids are Not Christmas. Man. My brain hurts.
We've come a long way since Stephen was rapping about video games dressed as an Earthbound cartridge.
